Discovered Paintnet a little before Thanksgiving last year. I hang around some Football message boards a lot. So most of what I've been doing with Paintnet is related to sig pics, etc. I do want to learn how to make things/words that look glassy...like Lance's name that is green/glass looking. I have a ton of problems trying to download the plugins though. I can't quite seem to get the hang of doing that!!!!! I've tried to down load Pyrochild's stuff to make me one of those Gradient bar sigs, but I gave up...I just can NOT get it to download. I'm using a Dell PC, Google Chrome, oh and I'm 57---be 58 in July so I'm just not too PC savy anyhow. I keep my pics in a Photobucket thingy . Anyhow, great to be here and love using Paintnet. VTdad---Keith.

Hi there vtdad, welcome to the forum. So you have had problems downloading plug ins . Have you read the help threads on the main forum? forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/1708-how-to-install-pluginsgeneral-plugin-troubleshooting-thread/The link to each plug in is usually on the first page of the thread concerned. Once you have downloaded the file if it is a zip file (which it usually is), extract the contents then right click and copy the dll file , or if there is more than one like with Pyro`s , copy the ones you want to use. Then go to C:\Program Files\Paint.NET\Effects and right click again and choose paste. And they should be copied into the effects folder. When you next open PDN your new plug ins should be installed. Hope this helps . Just ask if you have a problem and anyone here will be glad to help .

It is also worth remembering that some plugin packs contain some files that is not a plugin. But a file that is necessary for the OTHER dll files to function. ( Pyro's have one called REQUIRED ) You have to put them in your effects folder as well.

Hello, Keith or vtdad, and welcome aboard to PDN Fans. I know you signed up a while back, but I'm glad you got around to posting.
I'll be more than happy to help you with learning how to make glassy stuff. It took me a long time to learn how to make glassy object, and I'm sure others here will be more than happy to give you tips here and there.

Hello vtdad. God to have you here.
Plugins have to be downloaded but they also have to be installed into the right folder.
I ma not sure if there is a tute on how to do it complete with images. Let me know if you are using XP or Vista etc. I am still on XP so I could do a tute on that system. As for the later ones, I am not sure if they work the same way since I have no way of testing it out.

Thanks all for a warm welcome. Yes I am using Windows XP. Yes I've read the Tutorials on installing plug-ins. I'm willing to learn and all just at times I get frustrated so I back away for a bit. The main tools I've been using are the eraser, paint brush, and fonts that are with the program. Been tinkering a little with Hue/saturation also. Haven't gotten the hang of tracing/drawing the line around something (like a face) to use it on another pic yet either. The magic wand worries me!!!!But once I discovered that I could do most of that with the eraser...wow what a good day that was!!! Thanks again for your time and patience...I will get good at this, but I'm taking little steps! vtdad

OK, I found the Pyro sig and really want to make one of those. I read that I "MUST" download a lot of his stuff to be able to make the gradient bar sig thingy. Yet I also read that I "MUST" download some other stuff (?) just to make his plug-ins work for me. I do not understand what I have to download and move to my effects file in Paintnet to be able to download his plug-ins. I don't see anything to high light to be downloaded!!! I'm sure I'm not understanding something . VTdad

There is a big difference between DOWNLOADING & INSTALLING (not shouting here either). Not sure if anyone has pointed you in this direction Bolt Bait has done all the hard work for me, giving the instruction with pictures. Please let me know if this helps. If not let us know where you get stuck & we will keep trying to help you.

A very good effort! I used to think that I'll never be as good as the older ones on the forum but I know that I have improved dramatically. It will happen with perseverance, I promise.
I started out doing all the tutes. I printed them out & ticked off the steps as I did them but sometimes it just would not work but at least I learnt something along the way. More often than not it is the journey rather than the outcome.
You did well!

I don't know what you WANTED this to look like. ;D But i can say that the picture looks very good. Nice use of a handful of effects, and you maneged to make it look more then just pressing random buttons. It fits together. Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much, both of you. Yes the journey IS a big part of my excitement while making these things. I'll keep in practice with this one, but up next, I saw a pic that was of the word GOLD, it was all shiny as if actually made of gold. I'll find it and try that one as well as the one Lance has where his name seems to be made of glass letters filled with a green liquid...I'gotta make some of those two!!! Who would have ever thought you could have this much fun with a PC keyboard!!!

The main Paint.NET forum is being transferred to a new server or something.
It's not you.

Same here, vtdad. I posted in Rants and Thoughts, I can get the main page but just about everything else gives me the fatal error message.
Hope it gets straightened out soon.
