One day not long ago my neighbour's tree was full of birds - Waxwings, Cedar or Bohemian, I'm not sure which.. They must have just been eating, some of them looked really fat. And you should have heard the noise. One night last week I was taking out the garbage and saw some strange marks in the snow and showed them to hubby. He did some Googling, and figures they're marks left by an owl's wings when it swooped down to grab a snack. I haven't practiced much taking pictures of snow, so it's a bit hard to see. But it looked really neat. Come to think of it, I haven't seen that squirrel around lately .....

BP, some of those birds sure do look fat as!
The snow pictures are just awesome. I love the marks the owl left. Amazing that all you can really see is the wings, no feet, not scuffle of the small mammal. Just incredible!

I love birds when it gets cold. Like cats and some others they can get "fluffy" to trap in more air to stay warm. Good chance they are plump for sure, but they can also fluff out their feathers in a strange way to stay warmer.
Can make them look rather large when they do that. There are some raptors around here that do that sometimes and its comical that they go from looking all sleek and angular to round balls of feathers. Almost cartoonish.
The owl mark is a wonderful capture. And snow and sand prints are a pain to get on film. The lighting has to be right etc to get the sort of random illumination that occurs to highlight those darn things. Deep shadows can be mimicked with low slung lights, but who walks around with that setup ...

My camera has a setting for snow, but it's not perfect. I took the pictures the next day, and the snow had melted a bit by then too. Might have been better to take them at night, with a flashlight or something. I've never seen anything like that before, it's so cool.
Pixey, that's not even a lot of snow compared to what we sometimes have. At least this year it's melting some so I have room when more falls.
I hope you all will share your nature pics too.

Oddly enough in the desert you get the same thing in the sand prints quite a bit in the right areas. And of course, Sand-Angels instead of snow-angels come winter. ;D
I just scrolled through the settings on my camera and I seem to have a winter one as well. Doesn't say snow, but it seems like it would be for it based on the exposure length ... I've never had it near enough to snow to look for it really. Though it may have helped capture some ice build up last winter.
Still a great capture regardless of when. The fact it was deep enough to last was nice. Snow has too many darn textures to trust in my book though. Crusty, powdery, soft, grainy, etc etc.

cool pics of the birds and tracks in the snow BP. My camera has a snow setting as well. I tried it the other day through the front window and it actually turned out not too bad. I remember winter in Calgary. Nothing like the winters here LOL At least the Chinook comes and melts a lot of it away. Once we get snow here, it`s pretty rare for it to melt until the following spring. It is snowing like crazy here right now.

Well - this is about as much snow as I can tolerate. This was the year before last here in The Isle of Man. For 2011 - all clear, so far!

Pixey, that is such a gorgeous image. Like a fairyland. I know that it does not feel that great when you are faced with the trials that the snow brings.
We had a storm again today after a couple of days of high temps & humidity. Only just started summer too. At least the plants are getting watered for free. No matter how much we pour water on, until it rains, things just don't grow the same.

That is a beautiful picture, Pixey. It could be a Christmas card. Snow looks nice when it first falls, but it gets old fast when you have to shovel it. This winter has been okay so far for weather. It's going to be a few degrees above freezing for a while. Better than last year, that's for sure - it was like Ontario, it snowed in November and didn't melt. Even if there was a Chinook, it wasn't warm enough. My camera has settings for almost everything - snow, foliage, beach, night, fireworks, indoor, and a lot I don' t remember. I use kids & pets the most. I don't have to think any more than which setting I should use. I'm not a serious photographer anyway, my entire thought process is "That looks neat. I'm going to take a picture of it."

@barbie: I love her expression, too. Her nose was actually in the snow, but then I called her name to take the picture and she picked up her head with some snow still left on her nose.
