This probably should be a gallery concept thing, but I thought this was interesting. And of course, since I found it interesting, perhaps someone else will too ...
I was trying a few ideas with outline object after reading up on how GDI+ creates geometry (several ideas came to mind including a potential fragmentation idea for smoke blending) ... How that actually works explains now a freaking ton of why most of the bitmap effects work they way they do on some levels in PDN if my math is still correct ...
Right, so what I got versus what I wanted, but still nifty:
Basic square object against a large transparent background and then an excess Outline pass. The basic distortion reminds me of glass and the orb work so many here do extremely well. Irregular distortion and some bleed through may be useful for at least creating mimic objects to pattern from when creating those effects ...
Again, this is more to open up ideas and discussion on technique or extreme use of some tools that others may find helpful.
Base object with large transparent border all around it (cropped to display smaller here) and as the selection:
Outline using red as primary on that set to 74, Intensity 64:
**EDIT: Probably should have noted Median with the large transparent border can produce a similar non-overlay distortion of the base selection as it is similar in how it works.
** Let me know if stuff like this is just annoying or not for the forum. I know that I've often wanted to see examples in many of the main forum threads of not only plugins but more on each of the main built in aspects of the tools ... Tutorials open up the door to learning these, but I'm still a hacker by nature and seeing small scale examples helps me think outside the box (pun intended for sure) more.
