Is talking about version 3.5.11 of PDN a hanging offense over here too? If not this would be a good place for people who can't make version 4.0.3 work for them for different reasons to talk about it.

No you won`t get hung here Skullbonz. We tend to be a bit more open minded than the other forum, hence the gallery for art created with alternative programs to PDN. You won`t get that on the official forum. I can completely understand why people discussing 3.5.11 feel hard done by and a bit intimidated. While I understand Rick`s reasons for making v4 need Win7 SP1 or newer I don`t agree that users of the previous version should be just cut adrift unless they upgrade. A lot of people are unable to anyway so I think it`s unfair to refuse support. It`s not as if it`s an outdated version as most plugins (probably more actually) work fine. So feel free to talk. If any of us can help I`m sure we will. Might liven the place up a bit as well.

Oh dear, we can't have people using versions that old now can we? I think whatever you are happy with will always be the best version - even if it is not the newest.

Skullbonz, you can talk about anything you want here. We're here because we love art, whether it's made with paint.net or another program. Or photography or traditional art like drawing and painting. It's fun to see what we do besides PDN.
I remember Rick saying something like he wasn't going to support an operating system few people were using. I would have liked someone to say they aren't upgrading their computer for one program.
I tried to keep 3.5.11 as well as 4.0.3 but it wouldn't work. There are still some plugins I like that don't work with v4.

My point is that at the moment i just want to create pictures. NOT waste use my time learning a new software. PDN may not be so hard, but in my case it is also a new windows version. Windows 8 may be great for some people, but not for me. For now i am waiting for Windows 9, and hoping that Microsoft has listened to some of the critics that has been on W8 being great for tape-lets, and not for old-fashioned computers. And, you know; new computers cost money.

Couldn`t agree more - and I bet there are a lot of others with the same feeling.
In defense of Win8, there really is not much to learn. And with a small third party program like Start Menu8 you can have the PC skipping Metro on boot up and you can choose the Win7 icon for the start button. You would never know it is Win8 - apart from the fact it is faster. But I can understand people wanting to wait.

'Tis funny, but I was about to start a thread on here - thanks @skully - about v4 after becoming very disillusioned with v4 myself. After resisting for ages to move from 3.5.11 I finally made the jump. At first I was impressed, as I think it's must faster. Alas, after many, many crashes in the middle of my work, and hating the 'laggy' shapes tools, especially the line/curve with the nubs too close to each other, I decided to run both versions at the same time. @bp - you can run them both at the same time ...... see here how to: forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/27227-paintnet-40-alpha-build-5034/page-6#entry399792 Not long after using v4 I encountered trouble with some Plugins, mentioned it and got a very snotty response from @pyro, whose Plugin it was. He's very rude indeed, as are some of the other Mods when dealing with questions about the differences on the two versions. By now they must, including Rick, have got the message that v4 is a bit of a disaster. Has anyone else noticed a drop in 'interaction' on the main forum? I think folks are not as interested anymore. I wonder why? I too hate Windows 8 and have had to help hubby with it on his new lap top. I've lost a few hairs helping him out

I haven't had a go at V4. The old version is OK for me at the moment. My biggest issue is getting a new compute some days. But i wait for a time when i know i have the time to take the "fight" with new software. I just saw a short video of what to expect from Win9. It looks promising. Maybe old Microsoft did listen to costumers. Let's say, that at a point i realized that i didn't fit in with the main forum. So i quietly sneaked out the back door. Only go there to read posts. If i don't post i don't get rude replies.

This great news and I for one will be around here more often. Now if we could just give people a safe download link for version 3.5.11 many would be very happy. I waited and waited to finally download version 4.0.3 only when I found out how to keep both at the link Pixey posted. I do try to use the new version but my sanity is at danger when I do. It seems that I constantly crash it with something or like Pixey says, the navigation in it is very difficult. I know my way around version 3.5.11 very well, have a ton of old and new plugins that work on it and will not give it up so easily. Once in awhile the upgrade box pops up but I just X it out, lol. As for Windows 9, I wouldn't hold my breath. I can't find the article where I read it or I would post it here but I read that Microsoft will not be publishing Windows 9 because they said it was too perfect and worked too flawlessly to release so they came out with Windows 10. We all know how every other OS that Microsoft comes out with is junk. Windows 8 is junk,9 is good,10 is junk again. I know someone who works at a big place with lots of pc's and they just went through this and now have windows 10, she says it is just like 8. Fortunately I have windows 7 on both of my computers. Cool about the other art programs, I use several different ones and should post some pics from them. I still go to the other forum and throw in a dig here and there, lol. I already have had my head bit off a few times so I am a bit more subtle about it now. Never was one to keep my mouth shut when I know I am right.

This great news and I for one will be around here more often. Now if we could just give people a safe download link for version 3.5.11 many would be very happy. How about this one? Filehippo is a pretty safe place to download from. On the right hand side you will see a list of the most recent versions. Click on `more' and scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see 3.5.11 available to download. filehippo.com/download_paint.netNice to hear you are opening a gallery here Skullbonz. Might we be seeing some of your non PDN work as well?

Pixey, I tried doing what it says in that thread and it didn't work for me. I must have been doing something wrong, and now I've deleted 3.5.11, or I would try again. I even checked my old computer - yes it's still sitting around doing nothing - and I have the install for 3.5.10, but not 3.5.11. I like v4, but it does crash a lot, and I wish I could use Zoom Blur Deluxe. Not that I'm doing anything that important. Well, guess I'm stuck with it. I've never really felt like I fit in on the main forum. Even when I try to be one of the group I find out I'm really not. Good to have you here skullbonz. I look forward to seeing your gallery. Edit: Goonie, I was still typing my post so I didn't see yours. (I know, it takes me a while some days.) Question: can you download the older version without overwriting the new one? I would like to use both. But I'm feeling kinda technically inept today.

Blackpenny I'm pretty sure you have to remove v4 first and then download 3.5.11 and rename it in the registry. It was a bit tricky as I recall as I tried to update some Plugins in the old version and they wouldn't 'take' until I'd downloaded v4. Then everything seemed to click into place. Good Luck

Okay, I downloaded it from filehippo, and it says Paint.Net 3.5.11 Install, so maybe it will work. When I tried opening the old version before I got this: I'll install it later when my head is clear. Now I need to exercise. Or have a nap. Or a drink. Whatever.

Good Luck when you get around to doing it.
A few 'pointers' from when I did it a few days ago. I had the original 3.5.11 saved to an external drive, so I downloaded it from there ..... instead of File Hippo .... at first it saved it to my Program Files x86 Folder, which didn't seem to work, so I had to change it to the Folder x64. Make sure you have removed v4 before you download the older version. When you have 3.5.11 back in the Program files (x64) rename it Paint.net 3.5.11 and then go and re-download v4 the usual way.

Yes you will be seeing some of my pdn work Goonfella, making a cool header first. I love the program but unfortunately people always try to fix what isn't broken, lol. I kind of suspect that Microsoft had a hand in Rick's decision though. Blackpenny before downloading pdn 4, download version 3.5.11 in the regular place in program files. Then go and copy and paste it in the same place and keep both files, one will be marked copy. Now just right click on the copy and rename to paint.net 3.5.11 or whatever name you want. Now you should have two different paint.nets in your program files. I am not sure if it already renamed the desktop icons but I used the one not marked as 3.5.11 and opened it. Once you have it opened it will want you to upgrade, if not do it manually and just that one will upgrade to 4.0.3. One warning though, once in awhile when I open 3.5.11 the upgrade box comes up, just x it out. It will disappear until another update has been issued and just x it out again. Don't click remind me later or it will pop up every time you open the program. By doing it this way you will also get all the plugins in both programs, even the ones that crash 4.0.3. I got sick of that so I just deleted all the plugins in 4.0.3 and started from scratch but still have them all in 3.5.11

I kind of suspect that Microsoft had a hand in Rick's decision though. If i remember right, he works for big M. Sooo.... One warning though, once in awhile when I open 3.5.11 the upgrade box comes up, just x it out. It will disappear until another update has been issued and just x it out again. Don't click remind me later or it will pop up every time you open the program. Isn't there some place you can turn update off entirely. And there are not going to be any updates to 3.5.11, so it doesn't matter.

Okay, I've uninstalled 4.0.3 and re-installed 3.5.11. I have all the plugin zip files in a folder so I don't have to go looking for them again if I lose them somehow. And everything is also on a flash drive. Ready to download 4.0.3. Here goes nothing. Edit: Well, crap! It changed the 3.5.11 shortcut to 4.0.3, and when I tried to open v3 I got the same message. So I clicked repair and it didn't help. And I've gone through uninstall 4 and reinstall 3 again. You can turn off the upgrade notifications if you click Check for Updates and then Options in that window. Had to chuckle at the Donate link - I'm thinking they should pay me for all the BS.

Did you make a COPY of the 3.5.11 download and change the name BEFORE you downloaded v4? You need to install 3.5.11 then make a copy of the installation folder before reinstalling 4.0. Here's how: 1. Install 3.5.11 2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Paint.NET 3. Copy the folder using Ctrl+C (or right click + Copy) and paste using Ctrl+V (or right click + Paste). The pasted version of the folder will have "copy" appended to the name (or similar). 4. Right click on the copy and rename it to "Paint.NET 3.5.11". 5. Install 4.0 which will overwrite the original installation folder, leaving Paint.NET 3.5.11 in situ. It is 'tricky' no getting away from it ........ and then you have to remember which is which as sometimes it wants to open everything in v4.

Yep, I did all that. I changed the shortcut icon to 3.5.11, but after I installed v4 the v3 shortcut took me to v4. Then I made a new shortcut for v3, and when I tried to open it I got that message: I'll just stay with v3 for now.
