Helen try this simple method, 1- On a light gray background add a new layer 2- Make a circle selection 3- Fill it with B/W Linear gradient starting from top to bottom of the selection 4- Deselect and Align it in the center 5- Run Radial blur to about 30 6- Bulge to 100, repeat Bulge several times till you satisfied with the beveled edges and the concave center. 7- Run radial blur again ( optional) 8- Now duplicate this layer, zoom it out and rotate it 180 using Rotate/zoom 9- Gaussian blur on high the bottom circle as desired 10- You can add dropshadow to the top layer if it is necessary.

@welsh, Sargon, and Del: I'm going to try the methods out. I know I did the embedded effect in my sig, but I'm going for a "deeper" look.

The problem (and I'm not sure I can create an example yet) is the need for a deep distinctive line around the object. It requires that the button has a light reflection established all the way around it, then the black ring of darkness, then another distinction or blending light barrier as it blends into the background of the object.
Regardless of the light direction the button displays to some degree. That's one of the problems the example has is the highly reflective surface is helping to show the distinction between where the edge of the button is and the gap begins. Too much blurring without a distinct line of darkness all around is the key problem with the graduated shadows from what I can see.
I hope that makes sense. See reference center button of the device for the best example of the light problems.

Welshy I just noticed that I still have not had a go at your tut. Something I should have done long ago really. So this evening I settled down with PDN to see what I could come up with. I adapted the tut and made the image 3D. Originally it was just the flat text and maze but I thought this would be more interesting and a little bit different. Hope you like it mate.

Still trying to find my way out. ;-) Really great 3D effect, and i like the faint mirror effect. Looks like it is floating on a lake.

Thanks Leif. Tried a more complex maze but I found in 3D it did not look as good so you should get out eventually - I hope!
