(Funny name that .... sort of like the beginning of Manchester Thanks Pixey,.The main reason I haven't I posted on the gallery before is coz I was trying to be original'which is really hard with the standard that everybody does. It's nigh on impossible really, you've got Welshy,Barbie,Sargon and people of same ilk and you all just think"hmmmmm,"can't compete.Ive done all the tut's,even got my own way of doing metal, still find it hard to come up with something that hasn't been done before.Anyway, will keep trying.

Manc, you should have seen my early attempts! Honestly, I know I can speak for Welshy, Sargon & all of us, that we NEVER think "hmmm - can't compete". We rejoice with everyone's successes & encourage everyone. Even when things don't turn out quite right, we are here to help & encourage. Personally I got a lot of help from those others you mentioned. Now it is my turn to help. I am a teacher. It is what I do, who I am. My hero was Peter Pawn. My jewel work got better because he sent me a lot of great advice. I like to do jewels & I've been told too that I should try something else. I do sometimes but the jewels want to come out anyways. No matter what I have done, there was always someone to help me along the way. Originality will come too. PP's jewels are different to mine although there are similarities in our way of working. Sargon, too does great jewels. The results of the tute I wrote shows that there are a lot of great budding jewellers! What I did notice also, was that each one was different to the other & to mine. You will find your groove, trust me. For example, your shields & rings - just brilliant! Concept is not new but the way you put it together is. If we all wanted originality - none of us would be doing anything at all. When I first started I did a lot of tutes. I printed each one out & put them in a folder that I used to make notes to myself. Some I just couldn't do & it bothered me for a while. I took me awhile to realise that even if I didn't get the outcome, I still learnt something along the way. Do you know that your chain turned out awesome but I really bombed out on that one? Best advice I can give you is to make art, post it & we will help you. The more you use PDN, the better you will get too. As I said, I really sucked when I first started ;D

Thanks Barbie, very encouraging.I'm going to keep at it, I think hardest part is coming up with an idea. Shield just happened, was trying to do something completely different, just evolved. .I think saying "compete" is wrong,I meant I was nervous about posting coz everybody does such good images. Anyway thanks again Barbie, will keep trying.

I know what you mean. So was I at first & often I still am quite worried about posting an image. Missing You was one of those. Look forward to seeing more from you. How about doing one of the competitions on the main board? The Masks one should be right up your alley. You could do something with metal - like Ned Kelly?

@manchester ;D I know exactly how you feel. It took me ages to pluck up the courage to put up a Gallery. In fact it was three years after I started to play with Paint.Net, that I was encouraged by the wonderful people on PDNfanatics (Fans) and decided to take the plunge. The help I've received, especially from BBQ - who is a wonderful teacher, has made all the difference, as everyone has their own special "insight" and can advise on areas that you yourself don’t notice. Then, there are the brilliant tutorials, without which I would never have got past the most elementary thing. Of course, it's natural to suffer from the, 'Oh-why-do-I-bother-feeling’’ when we look at someone else's amazing results – then feel you couldn’t possibly compete. Trust me, I feel like that a lot myself, and others have said the same thing. I found the tutorials to be the key. Without them I wouldn’t have had a clue how to begin. I laugh now when I think back to the first few months after I downloaded Paint. It was pathetic! On one occasion I lost all of the windows. i.e. the tools, layers, history, etc., and didn’t have a clue where they had gone I was so scared to post on the main board for help, as Rick and some of the Mods were so strict, that I had to uninstall Paint and re-install it just to get my windows back Of course I eventually found the reset windows location. You are doing great and will begin to find your own style in time. Keep it up.

Barbie, thanks for the vote of confidence, but there is no way I'm gonna enter a comp, lol.Did you know that Ned Kelly was a cold blooded killer, just thought i'd say,coz most people think of him as a folk hero. ::)I did myself. :)Apparently he shot a couple of unarmed coppers, bad man.I read a lot of history, hoping to do a degree with the Open University, I've already done and passed a couple of courses,

I think everyone is nervous about showing their work at first. In a group I belong to, I took beginner classes at first, and that was comfortable because everyone else was a beginner too. Then I took a class with more experienced people, and I was scared at first, but you know what? They've all been where you are and they understand, and they have the same challenges and frustrations when they're learning something new. (And you should hear the cursing! ) So the way I see it, people who are more advanced know what it's like to be a beginner, and they'll be supportive and encouraging. People with no experience will be totally impressed no matter what you do! Entering comps isn't so bad. I've tried some without posting an entry, just for the challenge. Seriously, your work is just as worthy as anyone else's, and it's people's opinions that decide who wins. Good luck with university. I read history too, but mostly fiction. Then I look up the facts. It's interesting how different authors portray the same historical person.

Manc, what Blackpenny said is true. I have no formal training with art, except taking an art appreciation class in college, and I graduated with a degree in web design. I'll admit the web design helped with color and stuff like that. I'm basically a self-taught artist and read tons of PS tutorials. Then I would challenge myself to try PS tuts in PDN, and my 1st ever art work was the 3D jigsaw pieces in my gallery. Soon, I was making artworks. Right now, I'm challenging myself to learn digital painting.
The secret to a good artist is practice, perservance, and seeking wise counsel. A few sleepless nights, mood swings, and swearing off PDN is a side effect.
