Fade Edges Using Alpha Mask This method is good to fade edges of Irregular shapes and selections.
Plugins for this tutorial: Alpha mask 1- Open image 2- Select the object using Lasso tool, it doesn't need to be ferfect: 2- Copy and Past to new layer and name it "mask", Deselect, change colors to full black using Lightness of Hue/Saturation adjustment and distorted with Dents ( Dents is optional): 3- Blur mask layer with any blur effect as liking, here I used Zoom blur Twice: 4- Select all mask layer, copy it and make it invisible. 5- Apply Alpha Mask plugin on the image layer as this: to get this: Or this with Gaussian blur: For final use as:

Thanks a lot for this Sargon. Wished I'd known about this months ago. I'm already using this technique in other areas. It's great.

This was a fun way to learn about the alpha mask. I still need more practice so the concept will sink in. For this tutorial I decided to combine two masked produced images into one. I found I needed to use the smudge tool a lot. Although it isn't perfect, what's Beavis without Butthead? Anyway, do you know why Beavis (on the right) has a faint remnant halo from the lasso select tool? Thank you for offering this tutorial.

Blanco, your eyes must be so much better than mine. I had to stare at the image for about 5 minutes before I could discern the "lasso" remnant. NOt sure than I can explain why you have the very faint remnant but quite possibly because from the masking the colour is not exactly the same as the white background colour. I hope someone has a better way of describing it. Sometimes Gaussian Blur will take care of it. You could try Feather & AA Assistant. I am still coming to grips with the concept myself. This is what I came up with using parts of this tute:

This is what I came up with using parts of this tute: I love the popout effect. That's a great idea! I've only used rectangles (and one oval) for frames in my several popout images. I think you motivated me to combine SargonIII's mask tutorial in a popout image. (or at least think about whether I'm up to it). Thanks for the tips on the blurring techniques.

Thanks SargonIII. Another awesome tutorial. I made this first try. It's scary as one of this very busy cat is more than enough! LOL
