I think we would all benefit from a thread for each of us to share about "free" software that we might be using. So I'll start. I've been using an "icon editor" software for years and it's absolutely free. It's called "IconFX" and you can get it here. Here's a screen shot of the down load site, click on the thumb image: What I generally use it for is it's "screen capture" capability. For example, I just completed a SIG of "DareDevil" and I wanted to use it for my SIG projects folder on my desk top. I captured an image of the SIG and now the folder is a picture of DareDevil on my desk top, like this...... You can see the red folder on this screen shot called "SIG Projects." It makes the folder stand out and easier to find no matter where the folder might end up. I made the blue gem icons the same way. So, if you have cool free software information, share it here. They do not have to be art related and be sure to include a link to where the software can be found.

Yes, IcoFX is an amazing program, I use it all the time I also seem to find myself using my Batch Image Processor quite a bit (not to toot my own horn). Also, (not exactly art-related, but I couldn't do what I do without it) I love Stardock Fences to death. It lets me organize where files go on my desktop, and since I own the Pro version, I can even specify where I want new files created on my desktop to go by default! No more searching for that PDN file that got 'lost' among my desktop icons. And last but definitely not least, since I use Imageshack to do my image hosting, I use the Imageshack Uploader app, which lets me upload tons of images at once without bothering with their website's messy upload interface. Have a nice day, ~Sidneys1

I also use SU not very often. Quite a lot now actually ! I still keep getting dragged away by this funny old program called PDN though
If you want landscapes Terragen is one to go for. The older Classic version is easier to get started on but TG2 is more powerful.

Great find Welshy. I never knew there were so many!
I did notice that it has Sketchup 6 listed. It`s way out of date there as it is now on version 8.

If you want to use a site like Imageshack to post an image but don`t have an account, it means you lose access to the URL when you have finished which can be a pain if you find you need to post the same image somewhere else. It means having to upload it again or find the webpage you posted on previously to be able to copy the URL again . Well you can get around all this by using a great program called Clipboard Master by Jumping Bytes ( www.jumpingbytes.com/en/clipboard-master/manual/mainwindow.html ) This program extends the capabilities of the clipboard considerably . It saves anything that has been copied so you can easily access it later. Also you can copy more than just one thing at a time if you need to post more than one image . If you are not sure you have chosen the right URL to paste, just highlight it , right click and choose `View' to be able to look at a preview of the image/text chosen. You can go with the default hotkey combo to show the clipboard or set your own. I have mine set as Ctrl-B (B for board- makes it easier to remember) . If you are always posting on websites ( and let`s face it , we are always posting something ) it is a very handy program to have. And of course it is free to use or I would not be adding it to this thread. You really have to try it to appreciate how much it can do. I highly recommend it.

Don't know if anyone knows of this camstudio.org/ its alittle programme that records what you do on your desktop. Once you run it you hit the record button and everything you from that moment on is recorded as an avi file or flash video. Very good for making tuts or just a video for yourself to reference back to. You will need to change where it saves the avi file to default is the windows temp folder just select options , program options , directory for recording and user defined I set mine to put it on the desktop. You may need to also fiddle about with the codecs and frame rates, it uses Cinepack by Radius, Intel IYUV, Microsoft video 1 and Ligos Indeo video 5.11 the first thing I recorded was only a couple of mins but ended up being 350MB in size

I have tried it before and had some problems with it, can't recall what they were exactly, then downloaded Debut from NCH, and so happy with it, it captures HQ quality in AVI format with a very small file size.

@sargon: I tried the free trial of it. Do you know how long the trial lasts? I very much enjoyed it. I really want to use it for future projects.

@ Helen ... the trial version I've got is for 7 days but there's an option to extend it to 30 days.

I used this add on for Firefox to make my metallic/glass sig tutorial. Unfortunately, it's not supported above v5.0... It was so super easy to use and then for it to be discontinued is gutting.

@ Helen, are you referring to the Debut Screen capture? If yes then it is free forever, but with some features disabled unless you buy it, anyways, I founded that those extra features are mostly for the encoding and formatting, and I really didn't need them ever, I just use AVI with MPEG4(Native) for video and MP3(Native) for sound and get excellent result accepted by YouTube as HD 720 or HD 1080 resolutions, BTY I have the free trial only for almost 4 years and it is working till now. TheBad1, 7 days for Debut? are you sure? That is not good, I hope they didn't change the license. @lanceii, FF screen capture add on, that is interesting, never knew about that, it is too late anyways I have FF 7 now.
