Yep, Auslan (Australian sign language) is different. Here in Oz they use Auslan or Mackinton (?) & they are different.
Making an "O" with your thumb & forefinger is extremely rude in some countries where here it can mean zero or perfect!

This is all a very interesting conversation. First off, don't ever worry about me, I am very hard to offend. Possum skin is very thick and tough. Secondly, forums are prone to misunderstandings. Ones that have international members, more so. It happens. Maybe some of you who are or have been close to the ones who have left can reach out to them and let them know that they really are missed. Maybe in time, they will come back. Thirdly, slang is a funny thing. Even in the same language, as we have seen here, some words mean different things to people of different ages and race. I find that the use of it in some of your posts makes it really more interesting to me. It's like a little window into your cultures. I really wish I could travel to see all of you and see for myself how the cultures are different from mine. Even here in the states, the cultures are different in the various regions of this geographically large country. I'm sure that those of you who live across the big waters would find it funny that things are so different in Helen's region than those in mine or Lance's. It has a lot to do with who settled each region and the cultures they brought with them.

I just noticed this.Bbq... "Jumper is a really odd word to describe a knitted garment. Pullover is the same in German & makes sense. Sweater makes sense too especially when you are a child & mother puts one on you because SHE is cold".. thought you might like this.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxmZZBJQAKM&feature=relatedenjoy. regards j.d.
