I'll skip all the zany "what's happening behind the scenes" with this feature @ Google. It's really interesting, but most people wont care about the finer details of it all ... (keep in mind, like lots of google things it is a "WIP" and will probably keep changing, show up in other places, etc. So consider this a snapshot in time more or less)
The point of this is that when looking for comparative images in the same tone and base composition, this can be a really handy tool that has started to change in the way it works.
Here is an example to consider on how it "can" sometimes surprise you and possibly help you out if you are digging for something.
I wanted to find the origins of a a Firefly series poster I ran into randomly. Neat art. Often when you hit similar images you find about 50 copies of the same image if it has widespread coverage on the net. Different sizes, etc.
In this case I got the other sort of result from using the Similar Images ability. The pictures are not related to anything more than the fact there are faces and the color tone. For the most part. There are some really surprising things buried int he results.
Here's the outcome of searching on starfly.jpg, selecting the first image and then hitting Similar images from the side:
Google search string: LINK
As you can see the first image is an exact match of the one I was looking for. After that the rest are just rather interesting things that look like this. Its not exactly keyword based, but image based to some degree.
In case you hadn't seen this, I thought you might find it useful etc.
