Aha, maybe soon I will give Blender a go. Sculptris was fun but I didn't get much out of it other than having some fun.

Totally awesomely realistic drum sticks.
Wow.

Bugzilla is great! Kind of eerie looking. Barbie, all I did with Sculptris was make neat looking blobs.

Barbie I know what you mean. Sculptris is a good program but I soon got bored with it as well. Blender has a sculpting mode built in , much like Sculpris really, but I never use it. But there is so much you can do with Blender you`ll never get bored. Thanks Welshy. Modelling them was fairly straightforward, it was the texturing that was the challenge so for you to consider them realistic means a lot. BP - even more eerie if you are a fly! ;D

Well first I would like to apologise for my lack of PDN creations recently. I have been concentrating on modelling Stephenson`s Rocket in Blender so it has taken up a lot of my time. The modelling side of things is just about finished now, next up is the coloring & texturing. This I am not so hot on so I think it will take me a while. I am going to use a copy of the Rocket file instead of the original just in case I screw up somewhere(more than likely knowing me! ). There is also a tutorial on how to animate it which I will be trying out. I have used constraints in Blender for the first time. This means that the various parts of the drivetrain are connected so that when the front wheels turn the wheel crank turns which pulls the con rod which is connected to the linking pin which is connected to the piston which moves in and out as the wheel goes round as it moves along the track. Amazing stuff! Anyway here is a pic of my progress so far -

Really nice. Especially since you took the time to gear up to animate. Not easy stuff on the surface to get into. Hopefully PDN will come in handy though when you want to color it up. ;D And the first thought that came to mind: More steampunk? Not really punk, just steam powered. I'll have to look-up your reference somehow, but would appreciate a link. Enough being lazy for me today ... Reference and interesting read: Stephenson's_Rocket

I thought it was a black and white photograph. Very nice! I like the barrels inside the wagon and I think that it's a cool touch. That'd be crazy (in a good way) if you'll be able to animate it or even color it in. I wish Lance was here to view this piece.

I wish Lance was here to view this piece. What ? Are you serious? Come on Lance, please, I thought we are much bigger than these small problems. @ Goonie, Man this is fantastic, it is very engineering stuff, I adore your ability in Blender, Can't wait to see it colored and textured, I like it though even if you don't color it, it is amazing.

Thanks Del. PDN always comes in handy for the final bit of spit and polish and probably be using it for this. Most of the main texturing and coloring will be done in Blender though. I forgot to mention that I did use a tutorial to make most of it. I had never used constraints until now so I definitely needed one! It was the one on this website - www.gryllus.net/Blender/3D.htmlI`ve used a variety of references for this one,as well as the one that came with the tut, including the wiki you linked to. You`ll notice the position of the pistons lower down than most of the pictures around. Apparently he moved them there on later versions because he found it sent more power to the wheels so it is still accurate. It`s also easier to model it that way. Thanks Helen. I think the barrels were for water ( not drinking water though ;D. ) They were another area where I used methods I have never used before. A lattice modifier to distort a tube into the correct shape. A bit like the Bulge in PDN. Thanks Sargon , I think Lance would have liked this as well. Never mind. My ability in Blender is still pretty basic compared to some of the stuff I see being made by other people. Still definitely on a big learning curve. Glad you liked it though.

Oh Goonie, you done it again! What a wonderful image & of course the subject matter is hot too! It will be a spectacular piece once you have coloured it. Nevermind that you hav not posted much work - when you do it is just awesome. Your work is always top quality!

Wow! It looks like a photograph of a model. It will be cool to see it coloured and animated.

Thanks Barbie. I`ve made a start colouring already. I hope it works out the way I can see it in my head! BP I downloaded the animation tutorial this morning and took a peek at the pdf. Wow! Talk about complicated. There is far more to animating this train than I thought there would be. I`ll give it a go though. Thanks Welshy. I`m glad you think it was worth sticking around for.

Well here is the colour version of the Rocket. The wheels should have the metal showing through around the outside where they come into contact with the rails but , although I do know how to use two different colours on the same object, I can`t figure out how to select just the outside of the wheels. I`m working on it though. Next up - animating it.

I love it very much! Stunning! By the way, you're also coloring it in Blender?

All the colouring so far has been in Blender. I have not used PDN for any kind of post processing yet, but I am sure I will use it somewhere along the line.

Nice outcome Goonie. You are one smart cookie & Welshy is right about your dedication to things outside of PDN. No matter what you do, you give it your all & the outcome is always fantastic.
I can hardly wait to see it all done. A beaut outcome so far.

Thanks NN. Which version of Blender do you have? If it is the older 2.49 then I thoroughly recommend upgrading to the latest one-2.61. It`s much more user friendly. Thanks very much Welshy. I just like trying out different programs. I find it is possible get better results by combining them. My spacescape ,Silent Assassin, is a good example. I created a much better looking asteroid in Blender than I ever could in PDN. Glad you like it Barbie. What a nice thing to say. Thanks

I have 2.6.1 but it makes my head spin I have downloaded the pdf tutes that you put in an earlier link, plus the files to go with it so perhaps it will all make sense. Basically I just don't know where to start with it the interface is mindblowing

Ah, now the pic loads for me ... Coloring in blender was where I got a little confused and decided to shelve cross training on it for now. UV transforms and the like especially. As a side note, when I was thinking of coloration, was more along the ideas of importing/using PDN created textures or what not. Again, I only have the cursory use of Blender to have spouted that off. Plus then there is sending it to an external renderer and all that rot too which adds another layer of confusion on how some results seem much beyond what Blender can generate. Kudos on the progress. Hope the animation doesn't make your head implode. I figure to do any decent amount I'd need to cluster my household and plan on another bump in the power bill. ;D **EDIT: Side note, had several years use of CAD, so at least parts of it dont seem as daunting. Of course it was cad on amber monitors and just wireframes could take minutes to update but it seemed very familiar.
