I make a few posts in main forum occasionally but it seems every time I post the thread gets dead - not much feedback coming. Plus the mods scared me off a bit when I was newbie in forums lol. That is why I joined fanatics, because is so friendly here .

That is why I joined fanatics, because is so friendly here . And I thought it was just me who was a thread killer ;D I think the one thing we all forget (myself included) is that the main board started life more as a development place for PDN and not really a place to showcase pieces. Although hopefully the people who must have spent a lot of time developing certain things must be proud of some of the awesomeness it produces ? You only have to look at the galleries here, and all the different styles of art to see that it's a very versatile piece of kit. I'm having a bit of a guilt trip from some of my moans about the main board because without it I wouldn't have discovered PDN nor made some of the friends I have

Welshy, I got to quit moaning about the main board as well. I know one reason I left was the lack of quality feedback. Funny thing is, most of the feedbacks comes from the Fans' members.

Well, it seems I was wrong then.
I see what you are saying. It does get aggravating when you post a new piece of art and nothing happens. You feel unappreciated, and feel like your art isn't good.
I try to post as much as I can in people's gallery so they do not leave. Hence the big majority of my 2,000 posts. I really enjoying commenting, so I comment just a bit more than I usually do.
I haven't got a whole lot of comments lately in my gallery either. It is a bit upsetting to see how lively the forum used to be, and to look at it now.

I did try to return to the main board when it changed server. But when one of my post was answered with a "hell no" i realized that if i kept posting there i would end up picking a fight. So i look, but don't post.

Barbie , I read your post about the flooding. I`m so so sorry it`s been so bad. I`ve been watching the pictures on TV in utter amazement at the scale and severity of them . My thoughts are with you and your family. I hope things get better soon. I have plenty of relatives in Oz but thankfully none of them live near the floods. Unfortunately in these situations you get to see the worst as well as the best in people. I hope those looters are caught and are made to pay for what they have done. It`s despicable how scum like this prefer to steal rather than help those in trouble. So Beyond Redemption - it`s you Patty! Thanks heavens for that, it takes ages(for me anyway!) to write down your username ! As for the main board, I agree with blackpenny and Welshy. The mods are just too rude. If someone posts in the wrong place just move the thread and explain why. But too often you just get - `Read the rules!' and the thread is locked . Ella I can understand how you felt about the mods when you were a newbie. It was the main reason I joined this forum first. I only really joined the main one after I had met a few guys on Fans who were also on the main forum. That and the need to ask about a problem with a plug in.

Barbie makes a good point when she say's "What worries me is that if the main board dies, there will be no new plugins & the program itself will sit unfinished on Rick's hard drive & we will have to use some other second-rate program to create our art."
This is an excellent point and we need to support the main board.

I don't think the board will ever die. there's got to be 10,000's (maybe 100,000's) of people who use paint.net, but just choose to never post there.
Judging by the views my gallery has got the past 12 months, to get over 90,000 in one year alone makes you realise how many people do pop into the galleries. They just choose not to post/ comment. Personally speaking, it's only BarbieQ, Chrisco' and Heat' who make mine tick over. With the odd comment from others, now and again. Not a great return when I put about 40 hours into my larger pieces. But I've never stopped posting there.
But sadly it is getting to the stage where I'm thinking ... sod it, why should I bother commenting when others can't
*** Edit *** Just to clarify what Goon' said above ... i didn't say the Mods were rude ... I said when I comment and people don't say thanks ... i find that extremely irritating because I always thank people. Either in long essays or by name even if it's a short reply

Same with my gallery. Tons of views, but hardly any comments. Then again, it could be those spam bots we have all discovered.
And I agree with Welshy, I do not think the forum will die. There's "...got to be 10,000's (maybe 100,000's) of people who use paint.net, but just choose to never post there."

Sorry Welshy. Guess I got the wrong impression.
Personally I do thing they could be a bit more polite to people though when moving/locking threads.
I very much doubt the main forum will die as there are so many who visit and use PDN.

And, of course, there will be those blokes who shows up with a holier-than-thou attitude who then get themselves banned. Sometimes reading those posts are funny because you just know the banhammer is a-coming.
The main forum will always be primarily a support forum with artistic aspect secondary, and competition a distant third.

Good points Welshy.
There are a few questions that arose in my mind because I felt like you for a while.
1. Why do I create art? Answer: because I can, because I want to, because it cheaper & marginally healthier than drinking enough alcohol to make me forget the things that bother me. Because it's like Drano for my brain.
I try to follow tutes because I realise the hard yakka that goes into writing it & I want to show my appreciation. Having said that there are a few that get me so side-tracked that I never get to finish them but they provide the inspiration for great pieces & bring me a lot of pleasure.
It pleases me to create. Personal satisfaction in achieving something that I thought I couldn't do. Coming up with an idea & getting it onto the screen.
Entering comps to see how my interpretation of the theme fits in with others, showing support to hosts but most importantly, the other competitors. I've won a couple almost by default which is the saddest of all wins.
My art is a testament to the power of PDN & the fanatics who shared their knowledge with me. I post my images to encourage others both new & more experienced ones & to get some feedback on how to improve, if not with this one but something to keep in mind for next time.
2. Yep, I have commented on heaps of threads & it is like I don't even exist. That stings a bit, I know. The young one who snubbed you I think just missed the post by you. I think sometimes people miss previous posts. Not making excuses Welshy for some of the rudeness I have seen. I am sure it is a generation thing...I see that everywhere.
3. Do I want to break my personal integrity? Ah-NO! I try to comment & encourage where I can. I won't let others shove me into their mould.
What is the best way to change an organisation's thinking & culture? From the inside. How is this best achieved? Good role models & strong leaders.
Mods - yes, I've PMed a few people after getting a mouthful (newbies at that) & never got a response. Also PMed a few with a quick word & averted another nasty.
I too have been guilty of bashing the board but it is time for a change. I am asking each one of you to help me make a difference on the main board to improve the quality there & to attract nice members there too. - Hey it's our too you know!
Geez, I must have bought a couple of dozen soap boxes at auction!

Thanks everyone and Goonfella , just call me Patty it's shorter ^_^ as for the main board I don't want to keep bashing it I just don't like it there but like I told barbie I am willing to come back only not just yet .. I love Da most probably because of the ease of loading my art there , unlike here and the main board where we have to use photobucket or what not then I have to worry about bandwith overloads .. As for Paint.Net going under I think that is highly unlikely too many people signed up there but I'm no expert I could be wrong and another thing that made me angry about the main board was the Galleria , Pyrochild said that my pieces were back logged and that was last year , yet recently I checked the Galleria and what did I see ? Goonfella's camera and barbie's art , which to me is a slap in the face . Kudos to Goonfella and barbie for getting their works in the galleria . what I'm saying is he never had any intentions of putting my work in the Galleria and nothing irritates me more than a liar and an insufferable know it all .

Patty, I wouldn't worry too much about the Galleria. I don't even have a piece in there, and I have been using PDN for about 2 years now. I suppose it doesn't help that I pulled my artwork twice.
Pyrochild is a strange fellow. He would be in an agreeable mood one moment, and a beast in another. I generally don't talk to him. I once smarted off at him, and he told me to drop the attitude. I'm thinking, "Oh, it's ok for you to smart off users, but nobody can smart you off?" That's my chiefest complaint about the admins and mods there. The nicest mods there are Ash and EER.

Welshy, I did say some of the mods are rude, and I don't think that's necessary. EER is especially helpful when he corrects someone's post.
The way I see awards is it is someone's opinion that one piece is better than others and deserves an award. Same with Galleria and any critique. It helps you see your work from someone else's perspective. A critique may be useful for improving your work, or it may not. Pay attention to the good ones and ignore the rest.
It is nice to be acknowledged and appreciated by our peers, but what matters most is how you feel about your work.
Barbieq, I agree with you about changing an organization from inside. Leading by example is the best way to go.

There is a lot of people not in the Galleria Patty. Don't worry about it, you are a great artist. You do not need a spot in the Galleria to show it. I have to agree with pyrochild...he is strange at times. Me and him had a fight a while back...do not remember what it was about though. I never really met Ash, but I do agree that EER is one of the nicest on there.

That's a rousing speech BarbieQ' ;D I'm not sure rudeness is a generation thing tho' ... it's like all walks of life, you get good and bad. I know some great kids who are a credit to their parents but then I know some who I could cheerfully smack in the mouth. ... I'm still going to boycott people who ignore me though It's been interesting reading everyone's thoughts RE: The Galleria. I don't know how the vetting process of works nominated works, nor am I going to second guess ... and I can't moan because I've got a few in there. In total frankness I've got better one's (IMO) that should be there before the ones that are There was one I asked not to be included when BoltBait pm'd me asking if I wanted to add anything to it before he featured it. Thankfully he didn't *** There's definitely some work by people that should be there and isn't. Everyone is right who says make art for yourself. It's the perfectionist in me who likes feedback ... always striving to improve not always such a good trait ... I'll agree that at times the abrubtness and tone used can be "woah, c'mon there's no need for that ... " from the mods. But we all have bad days ... I definitely have my fair share. I like all the mods - they're doing a job I wouldn't want ... and I'd rather people said it as they see it, rather than having more faces than Big Ben. At least you know where you are then. Life's too short to get worked up about forums ... Let's carry on making art for 2011 *** Written with no intention of offending anyone ***

Patty, I remember pyro saying that too. I know that you have some nominations because I for one nominated a few of you images.
He never responds to me either except to give me a dressing down. He's young & still has a lot to learn.
It was the collab with PP that got in the Galleria & the date is a year out too. My work itself is not in there & probably won't but it doesn't matter.
Geez, Patty, you can get an image out of Mandelbulb! Not only that but fantastic ones like the spindle 2 that you did!

Let's not bash pyro'
I had a run-in with him after taking umbrage at the way he spoke to me in PM and I said a few things back. A couple of months later, I like to think we've put it behind us.
His people skills aren't always the best ... but F-Me he makes some excellent plug-ins. I'm more than willing to forgive anything unless he turns up at my door holding a shotgun ...
One thing my head can't take is if this board becomes an Us vs Them place. Hopefully we're all here to extol the virtues of Paint.NET ?
