Uck at black bean sauce or/ and tikka masala. My wife loves both but my taste buds don't like them.
Tonight it was vegetable stew with an infusion of sage and thyme and a cheese and onion sandwich with granary bread.

Black bean is yucky, Tikka Masala is ok.
I had McDonalds coz hubby is away for a week. I enjoyed it a lot. Grand Chicken it was & a hot apple pie. Looks more like a sausage roll.

LOL some days I just crave McDonalds. My bf calls it a pickle burger cause I love the double cheeseburger with extra, extra, extra pickles. I give one meat patty to the cats to share so it makes even less meat. Today I'm eating sloppy joes, or as some call it, Manwich. Bf works late tonight so I"m on my own and he doesn't like them so it's a good day to make them. I'm noticing that we all have different foods or at least different names for them depending on where we live. It's actually quite interesting reading what everyone eats.

"manwich, manwich, we adore thee! Napkins unfold before thee..." Thanks a lot, venicet, that song is now in my head. I love sloppy joes. Sometime just for kick, I'd call it a sloppy Joey.

Funny thing. I've eaten from Mickey D's only three times (maybe twice). I prefer to eat at Burger King.
I ate latkes today! Yummmm! My brother made them and they were so good.

Sloppy joes? Is that when you put some filling between 2 pieces of bread & it goes in a hot thingy that seals the edges? We call those jaffles. Sloppy joes are savoury mince carefully stuffed into a bun that is hollowed out on about 1/4 of the edge. Mickey D's - never heard that one before. Pickles - oh yeah! Love them too. I always get everyone elses. Lucky me... Latkes - yummo! We call them potato poofers in German & now thanks to my brothers when they were little we now call them potato poofters. Politically incorrect, I know but given that a quite a few are close rellies who we love, there is no malice. Mum grates them very finely in a blender, adds a bit of sugar & then we top them with blueberries or any other canned fruit with a tad of whipped cream or just sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Same idea as the latkes, just a different take. I am enjoying the discussion on how we differ & yet are the same with foods & names.

We call Mickey D's, it's the same thing as McDonald's. My sister likes to make the latkes with only vegetables, like grated carrots, zucchini, eggplant, and something else.
My younger sister is crazy for sloppy joes.

Yeah, much easier when all you have to do is brown the meat and then add the sauce. I love to add a slice of onion and a slice of cheese to the mix. Sometimes even a slice of tomato on top. I have one more meal left for tonight. LOL

I have a recipe for "Souperburgers" from a Campbell's Soup Cookbook. It's like a sloppy joe, but the sauce is a can of tomato soup and a tablespoon of mustard. Dammit! Now I have a craving ...

Sloppy Joes ... I'd never heard of them. After googling I don't think I'll be trying them. They may taste great but the consistency and textures is a no no for me. Any soggy bread makes me want to gag. (I can only eat any sandwich with tomato in if it's fresh - let the tomato soak in and I can't touch it ) Tonight was a treat ... I've been so good on my diet that I fancied a fry up ... except most things were grilled or fried in a 1 cal spray 3 rashers of smoked bacon, 3 lamb and leek sausages, mushrooms, tomato and a poached duck egg Was lush. 3 hours later I feel guilty ;D

I made a packet mouse with forest berries in the bottom the night before. I was surprised how good it tasted & how easy it was to make. I'll be doing that again. The other thing I has was a chicken scroll that was cooked & in the freezer so it took 1 minute to heat up. I buy it already done ready to cook from the butcher. The scroll is puff pastry lined with bacon or ham, chicken breast flattened, apricots chopped, macadamia nuts chopped, & fetta cheese cubes. All of this gets rolled up & then sliced to about 2cm thick (1") like a pinwheel, put on a baking dish with baking paper (no stick, no mess) & put in a hot oven for about 20 mins. Here's a similar one: www.lenards.com.au/product.aspx?productsubcategoryid=18030

Since this is a food topic I had a question about cooking rice. See how in this link HERE the rice is like separate and not clumpy. I mean, no matter how many times I've tried cooking rice, it always clumps. Any tips?

Lol Helen I love rice, it all depend on the kind of rice that you are using, I use Basmati type and Tilda brand is the best: this for 4 peple or 4 plates:
2-Cups of rice 3-Cups of boiling water water 2-table spoon vegetable oil Salt or any spices as desired.
-Wash the rice and keep it in water for 15 minutes -While the water is boiling in the pot add the salt, spices and the rice to it, stir it slowly so the grains don't break and cover it. -Keep it boiling till the rice absorb the water and see there is no more water, it takes about 12 to 15 minutes. -Lower the heat to minimum, the lowest your stove has, and keep it for 30 to 40 minutes, then stir it and turn the stove off. leave it for more 10 to 15 minutes. -Done.
Hint: after 5 to 7 minutes of boiling you can tell if the water is less or more to what the rice need, so if you see the bubbles has more water than rice then the water is too much remove some of it, and if you see the holes are semi-dry then it need more water, add just boiling water,
Also its a good idea during the 30-40 minutes of cooking, you can cover the top with a clean white towel and put the cover on it.

Long grain separates more. Are you using long grain? Wash it, rinse it. Cook it in plenty of water, rinse it. Be sure not to over cook. It should be a bit al dente.

Sargon, that recipe almost sounds like the way Persians make their rice. I actually rinse the rice after it's almost cooked then coat the pot with margerine or butter and fluff the rice back into the pot. Then with the towel over the lid, cook on low temp for about an hour. The rice comes out like a cake, with crispy yummy outside. You can also put potato slices in the bottom of the pan with the margerine first. Oh, and before putting the lid on, make holes to the bottom in a few spots so the heat can rise. In case anyone is wondering why the cloth over the lid, I was told it keeps the condensation from dripping back onto the rice and making it gummy. And Basmati is my favorite of all rice.

I read that using too much water could result in clumpiness.
You all gave great advice. Now off to the cooking.

I use a rice cooker and follow the instructions in the guide. It always turns out fine.
